I recently finished 10 years of work as a Research Fisheries Biologist at the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center under NOAA Fisheries. My work crosses numerous disciplines within marine science and directly involves research in ichthyology, radiochemistry, marine biology and ecology, and chemical-physical oceanography. My current focus is on determining the age, growth, and longevity of marine and freshwater organisms using naturally occurring and man-made radioactivity. This line of work began with my MS degree in Marine Science at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML) in 1997 and has been a professional pursuit ever since. My thesis involved validating the lifespan of Pacific grenadier (Coryphaenoides acrolepis)—a deep-sea fish found along the continental slopes of the northern Pacific Ocean—at over 54 years. This was the first application of a refined lead-radium dating technique and settled the debate over a 6-year or 60-year longevity for this species (2 publications in CJFAS).
I continued this research for 10+ years at MLML through personally acquired grant and contract awards, which I used to earn a Research Associate position and establish and operate my laboratory (Age and Longevity Research Laboratory). My work at MLML led to the confirmation of high life spans for numerous marine organisms, some exceeding 100 years. In 2009, I finished a PhD in Ichthyology and Fisheries Science at Rhodes University by working to validate the age of Patagonian toothfish (a.k.a. Chilean seabass; Dissostichus eleginoides) and orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus) with the refined lead-radium dating method. Our paper on orange roughy put an end to the decades-old controversy over the longevity of this species by validating a centenarian lifespan. I have worked with numerous fishes around the world, as well as innovative research on deep-sea corals, mollusks, and other invertebrates using various forms of sclerochronology, and have recently worked to validate the age and longevity of hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). My most recent accomplishments are with the first valid estimate of age for a 1245 lb. blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) where I developed an innovative approach to bomb radiocarbon (14C) dating, the first investigation of the life history of the deepest living fishes (hadal snailfishes), tracing fallout radiocarbon from the Pacific Proving Grounds, and validated 20 year lifespan for yellowfin tuna.

I worked for 16 years in the Physical Sciences Department of Monterey Peninsula College providing teaching and teaching assistance in 4-unit Astronomy and Physics laboratory classes. I managed an extensive astronomy laboratory with large telescopes and organized complicated field trip logistics, including overnight observational field trips each semester for more than 120 students. Part of the position was to manage and teach student aides for laboratory classroom assistance in an extensive series of day and night astronomy labs. I maintained astronomy and physics equipment and a functional physics shop, and organized equipment for displays and hands-on, in-house laboratory exercises. I have also been working as an Educational Volunteer at Hanauma Bay Educational Program under Hawaii Sea Grant for ~8 years.
