  • Desiring Devastated Landscapes: Love After Ecological Collapse

Anticipating the inevitabilities of global climate change, this dissertation examines critically damaged environments as sites for religio-ecological thinking that do not begin with nostalgia or the sacrality of nature. Rather, this dissertation claims devastated landscapes, areas marked by ecological destruction and the anticipation of rapid environmental decline, as the fulcrum of an onto-ethical critique of ecological and eco-theological discourses on loving “nature” and as the site for ruminating on what I will claim are necessary shifts in thinking and practices of love, life, and hope. Weaving together concepts from affect studies, material feminisms, queer theory, and religion and ecology this synthetic project considers four questions: 1) How is love for nonhuman others habitually conceptualized within religio-ecological discourse? 2) Why are habitual formations of love for nonhuman others inadequate for conceptualizing love for devastated landscapes? 3) What are possible resources for rethinking love after ecological collapse? 4) Is there any futurity in love for gravely damaged environments?
